マイケルの曲は、ショートフィルムの映像と同時に記憶されるものが多いですが、中でも「Ghosts」は映像抜きでは考えられない作品ですよね。
この映像は、１９９３年の『アダムス・ファミリー２』のプロモーション用に創られたものが元になっているのですが、それがキャンセルになった後、さらにアイデアが盛り込まれて今の形になったようです。
現在、公開されている「Ghosts」の映像は、『ブラッド・オン・ザ・ダンス・フロア・ヒストリー・イン・ザ・ミックス』のCDとセットで発売されたＳＦを編集したもので、スティーブン・キングとの共同脚本による３８分の物語の中では、「2 BAD」「Is It Scary」 「Ghosts」 の３曲が使用され、マイケルが中心になって踊る群舞のメインパートは「2 BAD」、「Ghosts」 は、マイケルの魂が体内に入り込んだ町長のダンスシーンで使用されています。
松明を持ち、町はずれの屋敷に住む芸術家を追い出そうとする人々の先頭に立つ町長は、マイケルが性的児童虐待の嫌疑をかけられたとき、捜査を率い、その後の裁判でも主任検事を務めたトム・スネドンを表していると言われていますが、そのマイケルとは真逆とも思えるキャラを演じているのもマイケル自身なんですよね。
リアルタイムで「Ghosts」のＳＦを見たときは、Ｂ級ホラー映画風味のスリラーより、最先端のCGによるゴシックテイストが魅力的で、その美しさには惚れ惚れしたものの、最後のオチのつけ方がイマイチ、という印象が拭えなかったのですが、今見ると、この親子の一見類型的でチープな演技が、マイケルにとっていかにリアルだったか、それが、２０年以上経ってようやく実感できたというか、
スリラー以上の “ドンデン返し” がある、Ghosts（映像）のエンディングですが、『Leaving Neverland』公開後に見ると、また少し違って見えるかもしれません。私はますますマイケルの予見性に圧倒されました。
マイケルが自分で書いた歌詞は、主語が変化していくことが多いのですが、「Ghosts（曲）」は、長編の一部であり、３曲を使用した映像の中で、マイケルが一人何役も演じていることもあってか、めずらしく主語が一貫してますね。
